Deconstruction of Se7en Poster

Positives:
  • The actors' names, list of seven sins and slogan are in the same font which makes the poster look neat and professional. Also, the font is simple and recognisible - resembles Times New Roman - and the serifs link to the browny orange vintage-looking background
  • The seven sins have been listed which directly tells the audience why the film is called 'Se7en'
  • These sins have a red slash across them which connotes a cross off, as if someone is ticking these sins. This is effective as it makes the audience wonder why someone would be fascinated by sins. Also, the red connotes blood and danger which hints to the audience this film will be of the horror genre.
  • The slogan uses repetition of the word 'seven' which is also the films title.
Negatives:
  • The yellow titles are slightly hard to read because they blend in with the background. If the list and slogan had been in white, that would have been more legible and still would have fitted in with the colour scheme of the poster.
Overall, I think this poster is effective, it tells the audience that this film will be of the horror genre and about seven sinners dying (the slogan 'Seven deadly sins. Seven ways to die.') and the orange-brown-black colour scheme with the grainy effect makes this poster look haunting. Also, the slash over the sins connotes someone 'ticking' of the sins, and paired with the slogan, it tells the audience that there is someone targeting sinners. So, this poster is very good at providing the audience with a gist of the plot. However, the colours of some of the titles could be changed to make it easier to read.
