Sloth Shadow Visual Effects Investigation

In our trailer, I felt that it was important to add a few special effects and visual effects to make the trailer special and fit the supernatural genre more.

To do this in one of the scenes, I thought up an idea to have demonic teeth in a shadow almost eating the characters shadow and then suddenly disappearing when they turn around. This would be for the shot where Sloth is alone and the demonic priest first attacks him.

To formulate this effect I started off making the prop for the teeth idea. I did this by initially taking a large stretch of cardboard and drawing out teeth like shapes.

Using a knife, I cut out the teeth, as shown in the photos. Below is an image of the final prop that would formulate the teeth in this investigation and possibly our real trailer.

The next step is to use back lighting that forms a shadow to experiment with this idea.
This I carried out however it did not give the desired effect due to lighting not being strong enough. We decided that we would use our hands instead of this, making it look like the sinner was being grabbed or engulfed in shadow. This investigation is shown below:
