In American Horror Story, Larry Harvey has burned the right side of his face - his skin is heavily scarred, the right eye has turned yellowy-white, he has no right eyebrow, and he has small patches of hair but the right side is mostly bald. His right hand usually visible in scenes and it burned as well which is a good and consistent use of mise en scene. One point to pick out is that he has brain cancer which is why his right hand is like that, and he limps when he walks which are good additions to the character's mise en scene. Also, he is always in a suit and sometimes wears a hat - but only when he is outside.Points of inspiration:
- One discoloured eye
- Only half of his face is burnt - intrigues audience
- The limp
Teen Wolf: the villain, Darach, has a scratched and scarred face, her mouth is pulled back so she has no lips and the audience are able to see her unclean teeth. Usually, conventions follow that the creature bares some resemblance to their human form e.g. by having the same hair/eye colour and so on. However, she has no hair which adds to the look as when she disguises herself as a human, she has long brown hair.
Her eyes are sunken and are glowing blue, and when it is dark her eyes glow which denotes to the audience that she is a supernatural creature, not a mutilated human.Points of inspiration:
- Glow in the dark eyes
- Scars/scratches
In American Horror Story, the villain is known as 'Bloody face' because he takes off his victim's face and wear it as a mask. The veins are prominent and the lips are very thin and look shriveled. The skin is chafed due to the killer cutting off the face carelessly.
Points of inspiration:
- Visible veins
- Shriveled lips
Points of inspiration:
- Raw eyeball
- Tendons, muscles
- Charred texture
Overall, the points of inspiration I like which we could use for our demon's face is the half burnt face with charred skin to emphasize the injury and the pale skin - which seems to be a convention for all the above deconstructions possibly as it connotes illness, and in the villain's case, thinking ill of others. Therefore, the audience will be able to see that something bad happened to the killer which may have turned him bad. In this case, the deformed face will connote the priest's possession - he was normal (like Two Face and Larry Harvey) but then became possessed and this impacted on his appearance.
