Horror Hybrids

Horror hybrids are a combination of the horror genre and another genre e.g. supernatural horror, or sc-fi horror.

Devil (2010) - supernatural horror

In Devil, there are five people trapped in an elevator and they are each slowly killed. The devil killing them is able to turn off the lights in the elevator so the security guards watching are not able to see who/what killed the person. From time to time, images of the people in the elevator covered in blood and dead flash up on the screen, which conforms to the supernatural convention of foretelling the future. As the film unfolds, the audience discover that each person had committed a terrible sin e.g. greed - there is a woman who is married to a rich man and is planning on divorcing him to take his money. My group likes this idea of punishing sinners as the horror genre can be properly made apparent, and pairing this with supernatural will make the storyline more entertaining because supernatural forces have the effect of making the audience feel helpless because it is something they do not properly understand.

Prometheus (2012) - science-fiction horror
In Prometheus, scientists go to another planet which, at first, seems uninhabited but had some form of life on it. The film takes on science-fiction conventions of aliens and the film being set in the future. Promethueus then takes on horror conventions such as the character Elizabeth being pregnant with an alien which is then gruesomely removed from her. This hybrid is not very common, most sci-fi horror hybrids includes a bloody battle between humans and aliens. The mise en scene used to portray the alien planet, including the grey goo, really cements the science-fiction genre, however it overwrites the horror in the film, so if our group were to have a sci-fi horror hybrid, it would have to represent both genres equally. Equilibrium also helps make the storyline more entertaining and more open to different ideas which is beneficial.

Alien (1979) - science-fiction horror

Alien is similar to Prometheus, however, the horror element is made more apparent with alien blood, and people and aliens killing each other - which is made explicit. It is more gruesome and there is a lot of alien goo which makes the reader feel nauseous, similar to the effect of seeing a lot blood. Alien inhabit the humans, like Prometheus, and in one clip you see the alien burst out of the man's chest. This cleverly emphasives both genres and is effective in entertaining the reader as well as producing a gripping storyline.

Black Swan (2010) - psychological horror
In Black Swan, the psychological genre (similar to Prometheus) overtakes the horror genre. However, there are several parts of the film where the characters are distressed and get hurt - this film touches in psychological problems such as suicide and hallucinations. One horrific hallucination is at the end of the film where the main character can see blood pouring in from under the door, suspecting that she had killed someone in that room. However, the psychological element kicks in to reveal that it was a hallucination and she had actually stabbed herself. The horror is not to explicit, there are only undertones of it and this helps emphasize the psychological genre. However, my group wants our trailer to be mainly belonging to the horror genre, so we would need more gore and a horrific storyline.

Let Me In (2010) - romantic/supernatural horror
Let Me In is a combination of three genres. It is about a young boy and girl who fall in love (romantic element), but she is a vampire (supernatural) and the girl kills a lot of people by draining them of their blood (horror). A combination of many genres is effective as it creates a more complex and gripping storyline, however when there are more than two, each genre cannot be fully explored otherwise the film will seem too complicated. One negative of a romantic horror hybrid is it softens the horror element - which is supposed to be gruesome and nerve-wracking, but other genres such as supernatural or sci-fi helps accentuate the horror by making it more scary.
