Demonic and Possession Inspired Special Effects

As we are going for a supernatural horror genre that includes the aspect of demons and demonic possession, I decided to do a special effects practical. First researching into the different types of makeup that I could do that relate to either demons or the seven deadly sins, I gained inspiration from the applications that I found for my own experimentation. Below is a collage of the images that I found that inspired me for this practical.

From this, I did a few investigations into special effects that I could do that are connected to demons and the seven deadly sins. These practicals were not simply of face applications but included arm and body applications also. Below are several different investigations that I carried out:

The first investigation that I did was a demonic symbol carved into the skin of a persons arm. I did an arm wound as it wasn't appropriate at that time to do a face application, however the outcome was really effective. To create this, I use a base of liquid latex on the skin. With two layers, I then applied a thin layer of nose and scar wax, blending it into my skin with foundation powder and my application tools, as well as vaseline to smooth out the texture and make it look more skin-like. Then, with a pointed end tool that I have, I made the markings of the demonic symbol into the wax, colouring the indent with reds and blacks from my bruise pallet adding depth to the fake wound. Using the bruise pallet, I also added colouring around the wound and on the skin to make it look more realistic. Finally, I added fake blood and blotted it with a tissue to make it look more spread out and gruesome. The final product is shown below:

This is the prosthetic once taken off of the arm.
I then carried out another practical on blackening veins of a character, making it look like a supernatural occurrence is happening. To make this effect, I simply used darker colouring from my bruise pallet and followed to pattern of my veins under my skin. To the right is the image of the arm without computer editing.

I then took the image and went onto Photoshop and made the black veins look more enhanced and bulging using the liquify tool and blur tool. This made the image look much more effective, using visual effects created digitally, however, in the real trailer if this is used, I will spend more time on it to make it look even better. The final image is shown below:

Finally, I did have a go at doing a face application. This one was were I tried out doing a smily makeup with tissue, liquid latex, face paint and fake blood. I took inspiration of one of the images above for this piece and could possibly be what Pride turns into after the demon priest goes after them- making them look hideous and graphically disgusting.

To create this application, I started with a base of liquid latex. I then used tissue to build up the "wound" and make the indentation of the extended smile. Colouring the tissue with foundation to blend it into my skin, I then coloured the inside of the fake wound with reds and blacks to create depth. Finally, I added a dirty covering makeup to my entire face to make it look more realistic, and applied the fake blood to the fake wound and allowed it to drip down my face. The final product is shown below:

This investigation helps Raman and I collate our ideas of how to portray the seven deadly sins and also inspire us to think of different features to the trailer that we will be producing.
